The Snake Slinks to the Lake
You fall asleep in the backyard lounge chair after the third beer. Just can’t keep
those eyes open. Meanwhile, the devil Snake will draw your young child to the lake
or pool and drown them. It doesn’t matter which to the Snake. It’s standing water.
Now, with recreational drugs recognized as “agriculture,” states like Minnesota
expect a possible $1.5 billion pot market before 2030, says an article in the October
18, 2023, edition of the Star Tribune. The government agencies there have anted
up $22 million in loans to just one player in what is a major industry. The Snake
knows this will provide more opportunities to drown young children when users
become ever so comfortable and numb.
On average, nearly a dozen children die by drowning each day. Parents have
lost their key asset in life. No matter what time passes after the tragedy, one won’t
fully recover. You may think you have recovered, but what happens is that you
change dramatically. Living travels on a new, awful course from that point.
Whatever the journey had in store for you, now, with that dead infant in your
conscience, the whole paradigm goes haywire. It is a horror of the worst kind.
No good news comes from the past, but the future has many twists one should
take to prevent such a catastrophe.
Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) has an answer. They teach infants and
young children one-on-one, in the water, how to get on their back so breathing is
possible, then crying out for mommy or daddy. They float, rest, breathe, and yell.
I’ve heard those yells from a recording of lessons with our grandchildren. They
send chills down your back, but these tiny humans are learning to save themselves
and, unknowingly, save their parents.
Learning these skills can start as young as six months old. ISR says, “As toddlers
and young children gain more physical skills on land, they are ready to learn more
skills in the water as well. With our experienced instructors, children learn how to
swim confidently and safely, giving parents peace of mind and children the skills to
save themselves if they ever need to.”
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “Drowning is the
number one cause of accidental death for infants and young children between the
ages of 1-4.” Alarms around the pool are good, along with 4-sided fences and self-
locking gates. The critical line of defense? “Adult supervision,” answers ISR. That
possibility seems less likely with substantially more non-medical uses of cannabis.
Interestingly, ISR began in 1966. The information they’ve learned over the
years with 19,000,000 “Self-Rescue” lessons puts them ahead of the curve. Pay
attention to their motto: Not One More Child Drowns. Including yours.
